The Foundation is a high-output subwoofer in a compact 1.5 square foot footprint. Dual 12-inch spun aluminum woofers with oversized 480-ounce motor structures and dual 12-inch patented passive radiators operate as a mutually coupled system, providing the bass extension of a much larger enclosure. The 6th-order electrically-assisted alignment reaches down to 16Hz with a maximum SPL of 120 dB at 1 meter.

The Legacy Audio Foundation at $5,000 delivers performance that belies its relatively compact dimensions. With dual 12-inch spun aluminum active drivers, dual 12-inch passive radiators, and bass extension to 16Hz, it occupies a strategic position in Legacy's subwoofer lineup: more capable than compact cube subs, more room-friendly than the 190-pound Goliath XD, and priced where serious audiophiles and home theater enthusiasts can invest in genuinely deep, clean bass without reservation.
The Foundation uses a sixth-order electrically-assisted alignment that combines the output of the active drivers with the passive radiators' extended low-frequency reach. The result is linear bass response well below the 20Hz threshold where most subwoofers have given up, delivered from a cabinet that occupies just 1.5 square feet of floor space.
The Foundation's dual 12-inch active drivers use 480-ounce magnet motors, massive by any standard, that provide the electromagnetic force needed to control the cones at high excursions. At low frequencies, driver cones must move significant distances to move enough air for audible output. Weak motors allow the cone to overshoot its intended position, producing distortion. The Foundation's heavy-duty motors maintain precise control even during the most demanding bass passages.
The dual 12-inch passive radiators extend the bass response below the active drivers' natural roll-off. With 4 inches of peak-to-peak travel, the passive radiators move enormous volumes of air at frequencies where the active drivers would otherwise be losing output. This combination produces the deep, effortless bass extension that single-driver subwoofers achieve only at much higher price points.
The crossover range is adjustable from 40Hz to 120Hz, allowing seamless integration with any main speaker in Legacy's lineup or from other manufacturers. Level, phase, and crossover frequency controls give Dave the flexibility to optimize the Foundation's output for your specific room and system during installation.
As its name suggests, the Foundation is designed to be the bass platform on which the rest of your system is built. Paired with Legacy's passive speakers (the Focus SE, Classic HD, Signature SE, or Studio HD), the Foundation adds the powered bass extension that these speakers don't have on their own. The result is a system that combines the amplifier-matching flexibility of passive speakers with the deep, controlled bass of a dedicated subwoofer.
For home theater systems, the Foundation handles the LFE (Low Frequency Effects) channel with authority, reproducing the explosions, rumbles, and impacts that modern soundtracks demand. Its 120 dB maximum SPL is more than sufficient for rooms up to 500 square feet, and its 16Hz extension ensures you're hearing everything the mix engineer intended.
At 113 pounds, the Foundation is substantial but manageable; it can be repositioned by two people if needed, unlike the Goliath XD which is essentially permanent once placed. This makes it practical for rooms where furniture arrangements change or where the subwoofer needs to serve double duty between a music system and a home theater.
